Social Activities

Survey

Social activities in our community are a great way to meet people, keep active, learn new skills and have fun!

In 2015 & 2016 we conducted a survey to see what kind of activities residents would like to see. A high percentage were interested in having a village event, and walking activities also ranked very highly.  The results of the 2016 survey can be found here >>

We will continue to arrange a programme of events and details  will appear in the Calendar when these are confirmed. Click on events in the Calendar for further information which will appear when available or contact secretaryGCG@gmail.com.

Village Events

In June 2015 a BBQ was organised for the village, and a Ceilidh with a Christmas theme took place in December. It was great fun and our thanks go to Julie, Amanda and their band who volunteered their time to provide some great music (and dance instructions!).

2016 saw a great turnout for the Village Party at Griffydam Primary School for the Queen's 90th Birthday Celebration on the 12 June. Thanks to everyone for making it such a memorable event.

Keep Active

We were delighted to be shortlisted for the Community category of the North West Leicestershire Local Sports Alliance Awards 2016. The nomination made by NWLDC was in recognition of the keep active events we have organised in the community such as walking groups, cycling and Pilates etc. Representatives George Denoon and Sylvia Armiger from the Griffydam Community Group were presented with a runners up certificate at the awards ceremony on the 3 November. Further information about the Sports Awards and pictures from the evening can be found here>>

Our walks are a great way to excercise whilst exploring the lovely countryside and places of interest. They also offer the chance to catch up and socialise and we often stop off for optional lunch or refreshments.

This last 2 years have seen a number of walks organised with various themes. Many thanks to: David & Pat (Natural History walk), John (Heritage  & Moon walk), Darren & Andrea (3 Houses: Melbourne, Staunton Harold & Calke walk), Bis (New Year's Day walk), Pam & Dave (Congerstone area walk), Kevin (Grace Dieu walk) . If you click on the 3 Houses Walk and Moon Walk you will find out more about these walks.

Future walks are planned to take place each month either on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday to suit different levels and availability.  If you have a favourite walk or would like to lead a walk then please let us know.

Following  the first of our community cycle rides last year we will be organising further cycling events aimed at the whole family. Further details to follow.

Pilates sessions are now available in Griffydam every Tuesday. Please contact Carole on 01530 224237 for further information and to book your place.

A Running Group has also started departing Top Road Griffydam on Tuesday mornings.    Weekly  Tai Chi  classes are also available every Thursday. See NEWS >> page for further details of both of these activities.

Special

Interest

Groups

In 2015 we organised a 6 week art course tutored by artist Rosemary Mafrici.  Rosemary studied at Dartington College of Art before starting her career as a portrait painter and muralist.

The classes were great fun and of mixed ability and our thanks go to George for organising and hosting the classes.

We now have a mutual support group for water colour painting. If you are interested in joining this group please contact Brenda Robinson on brenda273@googlemail.com or Tel 01530 222 500

A French Conversation group has been formed and meets on the last Thursday of every month at 7.30pm  to converse in French on topics of interest. If you would like the opportunity to practice your French and would like to join the group then please email alan.griffydam@gmail.com. Everyone welcome!

Other areas of interest identified by the survey were Craft Making, Photography, Talks, Micro Pub, and Meal Gatherings. Look out for further details about these activities.

VIllage Competitions

It was fantastic to see the number of sunflowers around the village in 2015 and thanks to everyone who got involved. Winner of the school category was Lleyton Foster who was presented with his prize, certificate and trophy at a school awards afternoon. The Chapel in the Valley tots received individual certificates and medals for their display, and big congratulations go to the Brooks family who were the overall village winners with their amazing (and tallest!) array of sunflowers.

In 2016 judges chose 12 competition entries of photographs taken in and around Griffydam for the 2017 Griffydam Nature Calendar. The theme of the 2020 Griffydam Calendar is 'Griffydam Gardens', a selection of photographs taken by local residents of their gardens.
